Default General ATV battery question?

After searching through some stores I ran into an ATV battery at Wal-Mart. By the looks of it, it seems to be one of those batteries that you add distilled water to. What I was wondering is if ATV batteries in general have to be maintenance free or can you also run the water ones?

P.S. If possible, can anybody tell me if the "water batteries" would run just as efficiently as the maintenance free batteries?

Usually you can run either one, the maintenance free batteries are generaly more expensive.

if the quad is mostly on level ground the water type lead acid will be fine, but the more expensive AGM gell batterys by yuassa can be used at any angle and never leak, never corrode and last a very long time

I prefer the water batteries, they are cheap, can last up to 10 years if treated nicely and don't die through water deprivation. I had an agm that lasted about 4 years, which is shorter than i'm used to.

AGM (absorbed glass mat) don't leak when flipped, or even when broken, they resist vibration, and freezing better, and generally last much longer.

The flip side is they are more expensive.

Personally I like to run a quality brand AGM, and a Battery Tender Jr on anything that doesn't get used several times a day.

Sealed batteries as stated don't leak. Don't have to worry about them when they flip. "Maintenance free" is BS. Don't let them sit over the winter without a tendor or starting them occasionally. Once they go dead you are very lucky to ever bring them back to life. The "water batteries" are cheaper and work fine if you don't expect to flip or roll.

The cheap batteries have a over flow tube, you just rout it so the acid does not hit anything that matters incase of a tip over.

Whatever you do, please follow the instructions to a T on the new battery.
I did not... and it resulted in a new 54 dollar battert only lasting about 6 months.

It clearly states that if you do not bring the battery to life per instructions, that it will seriously shorten the batterys life. It did.

When you add the acid/water mix YOU MUST LET IT SIT minimum of 30 minutes before charging!

You also must not go over 2 or 3 amp charge and it will give you a chart to tell how long.

Dont be a fool like I was and think you dont need to read the instructions.
I wish I would have read this.
