Default 250x rear axle collar removal

I purchased an 87 250x with a knackered rear end. I got everything apart and ordered bearings/carrier/etc. There's a metal collar on the axle that doesn't seem to want to come off. (It's sitting next to the sprocket) It moves back and forth about 1/2" but seems too narrow to come off. The parts fiche shows it as a spare, so I'm assuming that it's somehow removable.

Apologies in advance for the simple question.... I've got a shop manual on order, but was hoping to get things ready for some riding next weekend.

TIA

I've had mine apart once but don't remember that part. Chances are it is ok to leave alone.

I believe you are talking about the star shaped thing that has bolts through it that hold the sprocket. That does not come off, although it LOOKS like it does. It is pressed onto the axle splines. I suppose you could press it off but when you buy a new axle, it comes with it already pressed on.

Nope... it's the spacer that's supposed to go between the bearings inside the carrier.

I ended up picking up a parts bike that's got a good swing arm and axle. I'm in the process of making the swap but getting the swing arm bolt off of mine is turning out to be really difficult. I suspect there's rust inside that's binding up. A few more hours of WD-40 and some hammering will hopefully free it up.

That's one of the main items I needed from the parts bike. I've got another that's heavily patched with JB weld, but I think I'm going to keep it as a spare. It sure seems that the chain design almost guarantees that the cover will be ripped up when the chain comes off.
