ATV Shopping Questions
#1
Been shopping ATV's with power steering options. Currently own 2 Ranchers ES. Wife had rotator cuff surgery and we are hoping that the power steering option will allow her to ride longer without wearing out the shoulder.
Talked to two different dealers this week indicating our interest in the Rancher 420 AT w/power steering and our useage pattern does not require large bore machines. Both dealers priced Honda Ranchers but both also actively promoted the Yamaha Grizzley 550 w/power steering. Sales pitch was " for only $800 more " we were getting a "better" machine (i.e. more power, more style, better ride, etc). We test drove both and yes the Grizzley was nice. We did notice different operating characteristics that I can identify as different engine sizes and transmission systems.
My wife is leaning toward the Honda because of two observations. First, the acceleration and decelleration response on the Grizzley was so dramatic that she felt like she was out of control. Second, we do a lot of wildlife & scenery siteseeing where we shift up and idle down to operate quietly and she felt the Grizzley motor was "screaming" loud when rolling at 10 - 15 mph.
Here's my question to the group. Why are the dealers promoting the Grizzley so strongly??? When we bought our Ranchers in 04 they were all promoting Honda machines because of "quality". Are the dealer margins better for the Grizzly? For the money these cost, we just feel like we are missing something.

Probably they have the Griz overstocked and the boss told them to move some units. You have to go in there very well informed, and just ignore everything they say.....
My next quad purchase will no doubt be the AT. Honda IRS doesn't get much attention, but it is excellent! And the trans on the AT makes a belt drive look silly.
