There is no Rancher 450. There is a Rancher 350 and Foreman 450. It is academic however, because both have a similar rear end.
Best thing is to get a service manual and get an idea of what is in the rear end and that will give you hints of what could go wrong. I would begin by being sure my rear end has oil in it. After that, I would suspect something in the brake housing. If it is bearings, don't let it go because you can do lots of colateral damage.
