Default 04 foreman ES, 4x4 indicator blinks 4 times

I saw some similar posts, but nothing too specific.

I just bought a 2004 foreman, and when shifting from 2 to 4 wheel drive while moving, the indicator will sometimes blink 4 times, pause, and repeat. If I shut the machine off and restart, it works fine. If I shift it while it's not moving, it works fine.

I have seen that it may indicate a voltage problem? Is that correct? The bike has a brand new battery and it seems to charge fine and everything works fine. I asked the previous owner and he said it's done it to him and has been that way for over a year, so that would suggest that it's not directly related to changing the battery, though I will recheck the connections.

I'll check the fuses [not at home currently] but what else can I look at?

Thanks very much. I need to get a service manual so I can find all the parts, but I appreciate your quick reply.

But, I am a bit confused, and that will likely be clarified when I get a manual, but, how does one check for continuity on the various wires to ground if the ignition is switched off and it's an electric shift?
