Default which 400ex to buy

This guy has a 99 model 400ex with 06 plastic, carb, and front shocks. Has the 426 kit on it and needs new tires and he is asking $1700. Just wondering why the 06 plastics and how the motor could be. The other is an 07 perfect condition jet kit nerf bars and thats about it. He said maybe 45 hours on it and he wants $2700. Any ideas? I like the new because of that and I feel leary about the 99 with all the upgrades but its cheap. I just want a good daily quad without any problems and I might race it one day, maybe but for the most part it is for fun?

undoubtably the newer model, you wont have nearly as many problems, you can always mod the newer one up if you want to race.

so I talked to the guy with the 07 model and it has the jet kit, HMF exhaust, pro tapper bars, nerf bars, and maxxis razor tires. I feel better about the 07 model but really like the price of the 99 model. Would the 07 model require alot of upgrades to be competitive? Ive raced dirt bikes all my life and a 125 bike that I raced could keep up wiht the 250cc. i think it is all rider but what do you all think. Im not going after drag racing but rather track racing and mostly weekend riding not racing. But I feel the racing bug might bite me again, but dang Im getting old and I dont heal like I used too.

Total no brainer on this one, definitely go with the 07', if you have the $2,700 to spend that is the quad for you, it has tasteful mods, reverse, it is most likely a one owner bike, and for $1000 more your getting a machine that is 8 years newer. You could always offer the guy like $2,500 cash if he needs the money he might go for it.

I would go for the 07 simply because it has reverse and no strocker kit installed. If you plan on just riding your quad and not racing it the stock version will be plenty that along with lasting you a life time! P.S. welcome to the forums!

Thanks for the welcome!! I can spare the cash for the newer one, He was asking 2900 and he already came down to 2700, I might could squeeze some extra out of him but since he did the add ons he said he cant go any lower. We will see at least this guy is in my home town. Thanks for the quick replies by the way. Once I get this I have to fix my wifes 99 warrior!!

Once you tear into a motor, it is never the same again. The legendary reliability is gone. Do NOT get the 426!
