The 250r is a hardcore racing quad (compared to the 250x at least). They have a more powerful 2-stroke engine. You'll find that they're at least twice the cost of a 250x/300ex.

The 250x and the 300ex are mostly identical, the main differences being that the 300 has electric start and a few more cc's displacement. 99% of the info you'll find on the 300ex applies to the 250x.

The 250x/300ex are both excellent first machines. They're fun to ride, and inexpensive to own. You can find thousands of used parts for either machine.

Hope this helps and welcome.

250X = sport quad, 4 stroke

250R = race quad, 2 stroke

An R will handle better and has roughly 2x the hp stock.

If you are looking for something cheap to trail ride on the X is fine, If you are more into spiriited riding, jumping, or racing of most any sort, the r is a better choice.

For a first quad a 400ex would be best in my opinion. You may grow out of a 250x or 300ex rather quickly and the 400ex has a ton of aftermarket parts available, and the 250r may be a little much at first. Also the 250r will require more maintenence then the 4 stroke.
