Default 1987 250x smokes.. need help!!!

i found this 87 honda 250x on ebay and its at 400 with 18 hours left. it looks to be in good cond. he doesnt have pics directly on ebay(which i would think wouldnt help him sell it) but he emailed me pics and it looks to be in good cond. cut front plastics stock motor and exhaust. new maxxis on the front the rears could use changed.. the only problem is it smokes. burns oil bad. and im not sure if its worth 400+ if it needs the top end rebuilt. What do you think? is it worth 400+? and would i have to rebuild the whole top end, or maybe just get away with changing the rings?.. is it a real pain to rebuild the top end?.. im just in a real big money hole right now and am trying to find a decent steal to fix up and be able to ride again=[. is it a good deal? let me know asap.. theres only a few hours left ha

Top end rebuilds are easy. You can probably get away with piston & rings but it may need to be bored. All in all, it may run you $250 - $300 and about 10 hours work if you've never done it. But it may not be rings. There many things it could be so beware of that.

thanks for the input.. i bought it for 480.00 this morning... hopefully its worth the money... took a big gamble.. but is it possbile to just change the rings on the piston without haveing to replace the piston or would that not work?.. sorry im a lil new.. ive tinkered with quads and bikes for some years now just never had to rebuild one.. if you could give me some help id appreciate it.. and also with the 250x, taking the cylinder off do i have to remove the engine or just pull the gas tank and front palsctics off to get to it?.. this is gonna be interesting.. hope i didnt dig myself a hole...

First, get a Honda Service manual for it. You'll need it. $30 - $40 on ebay. A Clymer or an original Honda should work fine. Second, yes, you can replace rings without replacing the piston. But normally there's other problems when rings goe bad. Like a scored bore. You can do all the top end work without removing the engine. You'll need to take the valve cover off, then the head cover, then the jug. The piston will stay connected to the crank. Make dam sure you hold the timing chain with a wire or something because if you don't it will fall into the lower end and then you will have to remove the engine to split the case and get it out. Not pretty. So, first get a manual. Then tear down and look at things to see if you need a new piston. Pistons come in about 4 sizes, 3 of which are larger than stock. Measure the jug bore and compare to the stock spec in the manual. You never know, it may have been bored already. If not and the jug is in bad shape, you'll need to bore. But to what size??? Well, this is usually determined by the shop that bores it. They will bore until it cleans up, tell you what pistoin to order, order it and send it to them, then they bore it precisely to fit the piston. Anyway, you're in for some work. But hey, it is fun work.
