Average cost to bore cylinder?
#1
Ive got a 2001 recon,
cylinder seems okay, some carbon deposit on it, but when i took the cylinder head off the piston seemed like it had waaay to much play. it could move around in the cylinder and the piston rings moved alot and seemed as if they might be too big. I need a new piston anyways because the top was completely coated in hard black corbon deposites from long use of driving while burning oil (previous owner). Are the above things said normal? or abnormal? i need a new piston anyways and i figure i should have the cylinder bored and get a bigger piston and correct rings to fit it. So my main question is what is the average cost to bore a cylinder (at a mechanics shop specialised in ATV) and what it should cost to buy a new piston and rings. I dont like to be overcharged or taken advantage of by shops so it would be nice to have an idea before i go call around.
Thanks.

well. you stand at a crossroad. the piston in my 300 fits loose like that, but it has 160 PSI of compression. your motor will always rattle if you dont bore the cylinder. most places (if you use your cylinder, not a replacement one thats already bored) will charge 40-70$ then the cost of a new piston, and rings. i'd safely say 70$ for boring, 50$ for a new piston, and 20-60$ for new rings. they'd probably hit you for 100$ if they had to reassemble the engine. the black top of the piston is normal. its just typical carbon. (unless its rediculously oily) good luck. thanks for saving another honda!
