No that black cover is the brake drum.the round plate that the black drum is bolted to is where the drain bolt is. Between the brake drum and the hitch for your tow ball.

Ok...got that done..it's a no go. it was hard to find cuz it was behind the bolts that hold that skid plate (I guess that's what it is) on.

Now what? I can spray as far as the WD40 red tube will spray, which isn't very far really, into there.
I wonder if just letting it set overnite would help?
dunno....

thoughts? prayers?

Are you guys sure it's a locked brake that's causing the problem? It could also be a bearing or something locked in the differential.

Well, I'm certainly not.
I know this:
the rear brakes are EXTREMELY hard to work..can't hardly pull the lever.
And the right rear wheel is locked and won't roll. all others roll freely.
What you think?

Well, that's got a solid axle in it so I would say the axle is broken. Hate to say it, but that's what it sounds like. Take a look at this picture. This is a 1998 TRX300.

Motorcycle Parts, ATV Parts, PWC Parts | DGY.com | Yamaha, Honda, Suzuki, Kawasaki, Can-Am, Sea-Doo, Ski-Doo | Motorsports Parts, Accessories, Apparel

As you can see, the axle is one solid piece. So, if the left wheel is turning, and the right isn't, the axle is broken and there's probably a piece of gear tooth or something inside the differential that has wedged in somehow and is keeping the right wheel from turning. Take the differential fill cap off and look in there and see if anything looks out of place. I hope I'm wrong about this. I have never heard of an axle actually breaking but I hear about them bending. But, I suppose if the original problem was a tooth that broke in the diff., it might break the axle inside without bending it.

Hey that's a thought.!
Thanks..
But, why would the brake lever be so hard to pull in?

May be an unrelated problem. When cables sit for long periods of time, they corrode inside the sheath.

Another thought just occurred to me. When you turn the left rear wheel, does the left half of the axle turn or is the wheel turning and the axle is not? If the axle is not turning, the spline between the wheel hub and the axle is stripped. Usually it's the hub spline that strips, not the axle spline. The hub is softer. If that is the case, then we're back to the brake being the problem. Let's hope so.

Good eye Budedb I was so focused on the brake issue I didn't even catch that. Something severe would have had to happen to break the axle, the hub is probably spun

No not sure but all the times I've messed with old Honda's it's been the brakes. Not saying it can't happen I've just never ran into that.
