Why are ATV exhausts so Expensive?
#1
why do exhaust companies charge so much for an atv exhaust . A raptor 700 exhaust on ebay is buy it now for $1100.00 with free shipping . Thanks for the free shipping . And a 300ex slip on muffler that would just make your bike louder is $300 to $400 . I know there is a lot of research and development before they sell them and I am all for making a profit but you can get a full size truck exhaust for some of these prices . Just bored and surfing the net thanks for reading my post

I know that some of the more expensive pipes are made of stainless steel or titanium and yes metal prices are high right now but come on. I was reading about a honda 450r muffler last night (I have a 450r muffler on my 300ex ) and one of the adds claimed the muffler was 8 ounces lighter than a stock one ? I know its best to lighten up when racing but $500.00 to save 1/2 a pound . Just go to the bathroom before the race . How much have you paid for an exhaust system ? I have bought a $300 exhaust for a 300ex 15 yrs ago . I made an exhaust for my 300ex / 350x quad . I made it out of a couple of honda 450r exhausts I got on ebay and a 400ex headpipe . But I still paid over $125.00 for the used exhausts with shipping .

The high $$ is the result of high R & D (to make sure the unit fits and operates correctly), high production costs (jigs, tooling, etc) and low volume.
These parameters are the same on the automobile side: A set (pair) of headers for a Chevy V8 $100-$150 because of large volume sales, while a header for a Chevy 4 banger (one header) $100-150 because the R & D/tooling/etc must be amortized over low volume sales--just like the ATV exhaust maker.

yeah they don't really sell tons and tons of these so for them to give a crap they gotta make bank on a few.. I never buy after market exhaust for this reason I want to but unless your like super into it or rich I just cant rationalize these purchases..

High production and low volume I wonder how many 450r hondas were sold just last year ? And the 300ex has been around since 1993 or 94 and is the same motor. I have seen a full exhaust for a 300ex for over $700.00 . Go to summit racing and look at a supertrapp muffler you can get for a car its a universal fit . Its twice as long and is 4 inches thick but if you shrink it down to a 3 inch and shorten it it will cost you two or even three times as much . supertrapp elite series s/c stainless steel / brushed is $177.00 for a 2" inlet and a 4" outlet Check the prices on a 450r dirtbike exhaust. A good one can go for $1100.00 . For a headpipe and two mufflers . They should have to come to your house and install it for that price . Im not bitchen Im just well bitchen I guess . thanks for listening

While almost all exhaust companies sell to the public directly, the largest chunk of their sales come from the dealer networks.
Your dealer will sell you a XXX brand exhaust for the MSRP of $299.95
Well, the dealer paid Parts Unlimited $240.00 for it.
Parts Unlimited paid XXX brand $200.00 for it.
Everyone has to make their cut of the profit.
The exhaust maker makes a killing when selling directly,...but advertising costs keeps them from capitalizing on it so therefore it always comes down to your big internet sales houses, and your local dealers....and therefore they ALL must list a high MSRP on the item...regardless of what they truly pay for it.
