After adjusting my valves I am getting a semi loud tapping noise only after I warm the machine up and put it in gear under load. Where did I go wrong. Wants to idle a little high and some what rough. Used a service manual.

 

Was the piston at TDC with slack in the rockers,the flywheel mark in the sight window on "T" and was the engine cold? Your feeler gauge should have slight drag as you turn the flat head on the rocker tappet,when you have slight drag and holding your flat head driver tight, snug up the rocker 10mm nut.I usually turn the engine over a full revolution just to double check.Sounds like you have excessive clearance,I'd double check them again

 

I had a shop double check my work. valves are ok. They tell me the noise is only a idle and when put in gear its the clutch ingaging then it goes away. Does this make sense? Thanks for your response.

 

You are hearing the decompression valve.
