Default Should i get a 2005 or 2006 450R?

I can get a 2005 or a 2006 for a pretty good deal but i really dont know which one i should go with. I mostly trail ride on pretty open trails with some rocky slowish parts, and i go to the dunes a few times a year. So im not sure which one i should choose. And i have heard the 2006 has snappier more 2 stroke like power but would it still be ok for trails? Or should i go with the 2005? Another thing is i don't plan on dumping thousands of dollars in mods into it, although in the future i might get the stock shocks re valved and get a new rear link. But i don't plan on doing to much if any engine work unless i really get bored with the power. So which one do you think i should go with?

Thanks.

2006 was a year of big changes. Higher compression piston, higher gearing and lots of other things. I've been told some of the long distance racers still go for the 2005 because they feel it is a stronger (mechanical wise) machine.

You'll be happy with either.

No brainer, go with the 06. If you need more power down the road go with Honda's optional cam. Link...
Honda TRX450R - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

2006

* Electric start or kick start models available
* Engine compression raised from 10.5:1 to 12:1
* Engine bore increased to 96 mm and stroke lowered to 62 mm
* Maximum engine rpm is raised from 9800 to 9850
* New transmission ratios designed for racing applications and trail use
* Swing arm extended to help alleviate the "bucking" of the previous models.
* Rider position is lowed by 8 mm
* Rear suspension travel is extended from 9 inches (230 mm) to 9.3 inches (240 mm)
* Head light changed to a more "race-derived look".

The '05 had a softer suspension, but as time goes on, i would prefer the more recent model, especially since you are willing to put $$ into the shocks later on. Of course if they are used, condition at time of the sale would play a large part in my decision as well.

Alright, both are in pretty good condition but the 06 is a little more expensive. so is the 500 more for the 06 worth it? or should i just go with the 05?

i would suggest the '06 lower end power would be good for the tright trail and coming out of corners.

I maybe in the minority but, all being equivalent I'd go with the '05 and use the extra cash for a new filter/oil change and exhaust.

im probably going to get the 2005. considering it also has a two brothers muffler, stage 1 cam, K&N air filter and AC nerf bars. where as all the 2006 has is pro armer nerfs. and from what i have been reading the 05 is a more solid machine and would be better for trails.

I'm sure you will love it. The aftermarket exhaust adds tons of power that is very noticeable on the bottom end where it's needed.
