Default New guy needs help with a plug check

Hello all i'm new here and have a question that has probably been answered before but ill get my feet wet with it. I have a stock 2000 300ex. The air filter was shot so i bought a K&N for it(took out the metal screen from the stock filter also). While i was there i also bought a new plug. Didn't change any jets or anything. Ran the bike until it got good and warm ( about 15 or 20 minutes) and did a plug check. Plug was way white so instead of blowing the thing up i put the old filter back on until i get a jet kit. Checked again and plug was good. My question is how long dose it take a new plug to burn in to give an accurate reading ? was it the newness wearing off or was it truly lean ?

Plug checks are kinda hard becouse when you are just letting it sit and idle your only seeing the idle circuit. To check the main you have to go and ride it wide open then shut it off well on the gas pull the plug and check it look for a golden brown. The best way to check jetting is slowly rev the motor all the way to wot. checking where it spudders or low rpm is gunna be your pilot jet and upper rpm your main jet. also off idle throttle opening can be adjusted with the fuel screw. If you do adjust the fuel screw three turns out is the max and the idle willl need to be adjust accordingly.
