rancher purchase question
#1
I am looking at a 05 honda rancher 350 4x4
2005 Honda Rancher 4X4 with electric shift 6600 miles runs & drives great, does not use any oil.Overall conditon of the machine is exellent $2800
I have read some post where the ES can be a problem.
Can the ES model be converted to a standard foot shift?
For the mile is these machine price high, low or just right?
It looks good in the picture but I have not seen it in person.
thanks for the input

ES can cause problems. Those machines came with an emergency shifter lever, but I don't think it would be easy to convert.
Mostly when you hear about a problem with the ES system, it was a dirty connection or failed angle sensor. Occasionally shift motor or other less-easy fix.

Yes, ES can have problems. But they are not insurmountable. The angle sensor replacement is not a big deal. I would not be scared of it if your inspection did not find any structural or component problems. Price is a couple hundred high.

The miles seem high for the price...it is a Honda though and will probably last another 6000 mi. I'd say $2000 is probably more in line.
As far as the ES system, I would never have anything else and I never worry about it not working. I have an 07 Rancher 4x4 ES and the shifting system has worked pretty flawless in the 1600 miles of dirt, mud, and snow I have on the machine at this point. I ride in summer and winter in Wisconsin and have had no issues. Conversion of that system if possible would probably cost more than the machine is worth.
Personally I think you could probably find a lower mileage Honda for around $3000 in either the Rancher or Foreman. For what it's worth I paid $2300 for a 2005 Recon ES a couple of weeks ago that only had a few hundred miles on it. I realize the Rancher is twice as big in cc's and another 1/3 bigger physically but I found a smokin' deal by looking around on Ebay and Craigslist and using that as a price gauge. So keep checking and I'll bet you find something that is a good compromise between mileage and price. Good luck!
