400ex carb on 250x
i have a 400ex carb on a 250x and i am having trouble getting it jetted right. the 400ex carb is all stock jets. when i run the wheeler with it, it has a hesitation about 1/4-1/2 throttle. so i figured it was rich, which its a bigger carb for a bigger machine, so im "assuming" it would be running rich across the board... so when i move the clip up to the 2nd notch from the top, it does eliminate almost all of the hesitation that is felt. it still starts hard even with the air/fuel screw turned out 2-3/4+ times. i did order the next size pilot jet which is a 40. so now.... while it takes a good 10 minutes of riding before it will idle by its self and start without using any throttle there is still a slight dead spot in the throttle in which it wants to die about 1/4 throttle for an 1/8" then it clears up. also i did a plug chop and it appears that its running lean. does the plug chop only tell you that your main jet is off, or if the whole carb is off? i can tell that with the needle in the middle (3rd) groove its running way too rich because it stumbles from a little past 1/4 throttle to 1/2 throttle. im just looking for a little more direction as to what i should do next. i ordered some MJ's a couple sizes bigger and a couple sizes smaller than stock. this is a 1987 honda 250x with a K&N air filter, everything else is stock.
