I got my '00 TRX400EX about a month ago. Since my first ride the power
has seemed a bit flat, I chalked it up to riding my 250R and the engine
not being fully broke in yet. All I have done to this bike is change
the oil, locktite all the misc bolts, inspect the air cleaner, and
squirt some air in the tires.

Well, tonight I was inspecting the air cleaner again and a thought
occured to me, my throttle has some play in it, so I pulled the air
inlet off the carb and looked to see how far the throttle plate and
slide were opening, and low and behold it looked like they were only
opening about 60%, so I slid back the rubber boot on the throttle cable
near the thumb control, it was adjusted all the way in, you should have
seen my eyes light up. I properly adjusted it, now the throttle opens
all the way, from the moment I first started the engine and wicked the
throttle I could tell I now owned a different bike, wow, it sounds much
meaner now, I did this only a few minutes ago and could only ride around
in my driveway, I can already tell the power difference, I will really
ride it tomorrow to get the full effect.

I don't know how much assembly the dealer actually does, so I don't know
where the fault lies for this mis-adjustment, but check your bikes, you
may be able to get some free hp. Sometimes it's amazing what we see
when we open our eyes. I was thinking I was going to have to shell out
some serious dollars to make the bike develop "acceptable" hp.

Please reply if yours is the same way. I'm interested to see if mine is
the only one like this.

Soon to be a much happier 400EX owner.....

ps. Now with the cable adjusted for maximum throttle opening, there is
almost no play in the thumb throttle, so if you have any at all, check
it, you may be surprized what you find.

I have a honda 300 4x4 with a very very small bit of throttle play could this be adjusted to have no throttle play and possibly get me more power to my big Vamps?

Mattsibley,
You need to have a very small amount of play in your throttle. As you turn your bars to full lock it also moves the throttle cable slightly, so after adjusting the slack, be sure to start the engine, place the machine in neutral, & turn the bars full lock in both directions. If there is an increase in idle speed, back off on the adjuster slightly & do the test again. You should have just enough slack to prevent the throttle from opening in turns, which can be dangerous.

I've had my ex for about three weeks, just got around to checking the throttle adjustment and sure enough, it was mis-adjusted. I went riding yesterday and noticed a difference, but not a huge difference. I am going to install a k&n air filter, re-jet, and white brothers silencer soon. Has anyone else done similar mods? What kind of results can I expect?

I got a '00 400ex about a week ago. I purposely looked for the excess throttle play, and there was quite a bit, so I had them adjust it. After the first ride, I had a headlight burn out, but warranty will cover that. Otherwise, that thing freaking roars. I'm for sure going to end up as a decoration on a large oak tree.

Also, anyone know if the K&N off my 300ex will fit on the 400? And what jet changes, if any, do I need. I'm going back to stock on the 300 to sell it, and might as well re-use the parts.

As we all know, ATV modifications are REAL cheap.

Matt Sibley, listen closely to the AZ Hardpaker's wisdom!

Always check throttle operation with handlebars turned lock-to-lock after any cable adjustment, tank removal/replacement; any procedure possibly affecting the throttle cable.

Why? One example. After a shop worked on my ATC110 and neglected this tip, I turned the handlebars to cross a log aligned parallel with a pond, then . . .

You know, a riderless ATC110 with stock tires actually FLOATS! Yes. And, if the engine is running, the trike will navigate down a waterway just like the Natchez or the Robert E. Lee paddle-wheel steamboats.

You can also just listen by the carburetor (when the machine's not running) and pin the throttle, and if you hear the carburetor topping out and making a little "clicking" sound, then it's getting full throttle.
