Default Dies in reverse

We have a 1991 Honda Trail Boss 330 and when I put it in reverse it dies. Any ideas why this would happen. I was wondering if the idle beaning higher would help.

don't know of any reasons it would die in reverse, how low is the idle? it can't hurt to raise it up a tad.....
