i got a 98 300ex
and its a manual clutch performance machine
this bike is perfect for you if you ride for fun and trails. yeah it dont have 4wd.. but is it nessesary . .. . just when the time is ready for work or mud... and for the mud
the 300ex is well whit is light weight you can fly over it after that you can buy lot of stuff for look, security, utility, and PERFORMANCE you can get your litle EX scream over a stock 400ex and more.
one of the better thing to chek is
is your are more than 5,10 and 160lbs
the quad will risk to be a litle small for you.. but its your choice you know
you said that your 300ex friend got a kick start?!?! its strange mine have reverse and electric start
the 300ex is
good suspension
good handling
good reliability
power good for the stature
if its a good deal and the quad is in good shap i recommand it to you at all!!

$1000 is a great price for a 300EX in good condition. They are nice bikes for trail riding and are fun and easy to ride and maintain.
A few things you'll need to look at though. First, the 300EX didn't come with kickstart, did he do a conversion on it?
I'd take it to a local shop and have them give it the once-over to see if everything is in good shape. The last thing you want to do is get a good deal on the bike, only to have it fall apart on you because it had lots of stuff wrong with it!
Hope this helps!
