The Honda 300 4x4, as well as all current Honda 4x4's, is full-time 4wd with a limited slip front differential. This means you can't put it in 2wd. Whether that matters or not is preference of the rider and what it's being used for, but for most people full time 4x4 is just fine.
The other methods for 4x4 that let you put it in 2wd are lever's that manualy engage the front wheels (all Suzuki 4x4's except QuadRunner 500), button that engages 4x4 (some Yamaha), and button that engages the 4wd "sensors" which determine when the rear wheels slip and put it in 4wd (Polaris). Of all those, only the Polaris 4x4 and Suzki 4x4 (except 500's) actualy spin all 4 tires when in 4wd.
Which is best is matter of preferance & what it's being used for also. Every one has it's upsides & downsides. For instance, the Polaris system is superior in the mud, as where the others that don't automaticaly go in/out of 4wd when riding are better on down hills.
