im looking at a 1998 Honda Recon for $900 and its in good shape.
are they reliable?

If it's in good shape that is a great bike and a great price. They are bulletproof. But, tires can be expensive. On any quad actually. If it needs tires, expect to spend $100 each or so. So, even then, you'll have a great quad for $1300.
