Default 86 200x Idle Problems

Hello, new here! I recently bought a 86 200x from a friend for $100. It did sit for like 10 years b4 i acquired it. It needed bearings in the carrier. The carrier is all beat to hell but still holds the bearings. He said the engine was seized but to his surprise when I got it, it was just in gear :-)

But here is where the main problem lies. I started to work on it, squirted oil down the cylinder and put new oil in the crankcase, cleaned the rusty gas tank, disassembled/dipped the carb and cleaned it real good. The jets were all dirt free. I put on an inline filter and I put new gas in the tank and it would not run w/o the choke being half or full on. Turning it off makes it die almost instantly. I thought the carb was at fault and got a new one. Same thing, no idle. Then I read that a gummed petcock and a clogged gascap vent could do this, so I took the petcock off and cleaned it really good as well as the screen. I also made sure the gas cap vent was breathing. I took the plug out and its black. Any ideas? Im stumped at this point lol

That is strange with a brand new carb. I guess the carb is not the problem. How about valve clearance? Or how about one of the hoses from the carb? They are rubber and crack with age.

My bad I fergot to mention that the spark plug is brand new and the fuel lines are also new. I havent checked valves. I have a friend that has 3 three wheelers that may know how to check/adjust the valves. Im an auto tech by trade and know my way around with mechanical objects. If I found a tutorial or some step-by-step guide, I could do it myself. I just dont want to take it to my local atv shop, they charge an arm and a leg for labor/parts.

Thank You!

Have you tried adjusting the fuel/air screw?

Yea I have tried the fuel/air screw in all different positions. Budedm emailed me the valve adjustment procedure. I havent had the time today to get out there and do it just yet. Ill get out 2morrow and look at it more.

If I cant figure this out, Im tearing the engine down and rebuilding it completely. I really wanted to get a few dozen weeks of riding before the snow piles up so I bad I cant ride here.

Ah... this is crazy.... Adjusted valves and still no idle. I can still ride it with half choke but u can feel the power loss badly. I think the valves may just be burnt.

Bummer. I had a 200sx quad for many years. It was great. But two years ago I decided to sell it because it was so hard to get parts for. I bought a 99 Recon. It is a much better quad and I can get parts for it. I paid $1100 for it and it is nice. It's sad but I wouldn't bother fixing that 200. And most places don't allow 3 wheelers to ride.

Thank you anyways!

if it's got good compression and doesn't have a lot of blow by I wouldn't bother rebuilding it. How is the intake manifold? Are the O rings good on it? Sorta sounds like a vacuum leak.
