My machines are relics just like me, except the machines are in better shape. My 93 Honda 300 has a rip in the CV boot. Is this a repair I should attempt or better left for the dealer? I have no worry about trying minor repairs but if it has the potential to get out of hand maybe as mechanic should have at it. Thanks

 

If you can handle a wrench, you can do it. It's pretty easy. Just pay attention on how it comes apart. Don't be scared.

 

Thanks I just needed a shove in the right direction. But operating within my limitations is a strong incentive which prevents me from gettting in over my head. It does not look like a daunting task, Its an outer one which makes the job that much simpler.

 

Yeah, you can do it. I look at DIY repairs like this: I will attempt almost anything. If I get in over my head....THEN I will take it to someone. So far, that hasn't happened. I did 2 jobs last weekend that I had never done. One was to replace motor mounts on my wifes Honda Accord. The other was to do a valve clearance adjustment on the same car. But these days, there's You Tube, and tons of instructional stuff on the internet. I'd bet if you Googled those CV boots along with "How to replace" you'd find something that would help.

 

Sometimes replacing the outboard CV boot requires removing the shaft from the differential and disassembling it from the inside out which can be a huge pain in the ****.

I successfully used the approach shown in the link below on my King Quad 750 and it saved me tons of time. Give it a shot... You'll be amazed how far that rubber boot can stretch! Make sure the boot is nice and warm before you try to stretch it over the funnel. Get a cheap narrow funnel as shown in the video and trim the extra length off the large end so you don't end up stretching the boot any more than what is absolutely necessary.
