Default 87 250x need help!!

I have a 87 250x, just bought it not long ago, it's not in the best condition but it runs! Recently the chain has been coming loose, so I started investigating and noticed the rear axle is very loose and wobbly. The chain actually fell off today ..any help would be greatly appreciated. I have tightened the chain multiple times, doesn't do much. Kinda new to all this, thanks in advance for any suggestions.

Sounds like you need new axle and/or swing arm bearings. Both are cheap at Rocky Mtn. ATV and both are an easy job. Also, almost any part that fits on a 300EX will fit on your 87 250X, excluding motor parts. Also, you might as well get a new chain and both front and rear sprockets too. If the chain has fallen off numerous times, the sprockets and chain are probably worn. Get the standard rear sprocket and get a 12, 13 and 14 tooth for the front. They are cheap so get them all. Then you have choices depending on if you want low end or high end.

excellent advice! It won't hurt to get the axle bearings out before ordering parts. If they are bad enough for the chain to pop off the carrier is often shot as well. While you are at it, I would double check all the swingarm, shock, and a-arm pivot points.

Fairly easy, yes. If you don't already have one, buy a service manual for it. Swingarm bolts(the main one that connects the swingarm to the frame) tend to get seized up if not routinely lubed. They can be a real bear.

Scooter is right about the swingarm bolt being a bear. Once you get it out, make sure to use Honda waterproof grease on the entire length of it.

Make sure your bearing carrier is not cracked. That can cause the chain to keep getting loose as well.
