Arrow '83 Honda ATV 200E Electrical Problems

I'm a new member to your forum. I recently purchased an 83 Honda ATC 200E. It had been sitting for a number of years. Was running when set up. I expected the usual fuel problems from sitting, but was not expecting the electrical problems. Maybe someone can lead me through starting from scratch. Here's where I'm at so far. Thinking it was the CDI or coil, I tested them with an ohm meter according to an old Cylmer manual I had. According to the specs listed in the manual there should be continuity between the designated pins on the CDI as well as on the primary and secondary end of the coil. My tests showed no continuity on the secondary side of the coil, only on the primary side.. The CDI unit showed no contiuity on any of the manual prescribed pins. Got a used coil and CDI that supposedly came from a running machine (just removed). I have on reason to believe that the gentleman was not telling the truth about it runnig, but cannot be 100% sure. However, I tested them before installation and they too did not have continuity on the prescribed CDI pins or on either end of the coil. At any rate still no spark after replacing the parts. I am testing with the pull rope and no battery. I tested the key switch and the kill switch. They are good. So my question is the CDI test and the Coil test as presented in the Clymer manual valid or not, since the supposedly good units also failed the test. Is there a starting point for troubleshooting like the magneto or the pulse generator and how do I test. Note: the pulse generator does show continuiyt. Maybe there is some more obvious problem that someone recognizes. I assume not having a battery installed should not be a problem - right? Any help will be appreciated.
