Picked up my buddies brand new 400ex and he rode it for awhile. Then we noticed some oil on the fins on the motor. So we looked around and couldn't find where it was coming from. We checked the oil to find it filled in the resevoir all the way to the top (actually when we took the dipstick out, oil came out of the hole a bit). So we drained some oil till it was at the proper level, started the bike again, then shut if off and went to check the oil and found oil coming out again and it was back to the top. So we drained more oil. Checked the level and it was right. So let it run some more then rechecked and now it is staying at the same level.

Could of the dealer put so much oil in it that we had to drain 1/2 a quart of oil to get it at the right amount? Where could of the oil been coming from that was on the fins of the motor?

BTW..the dealer will be getting a call on this one.

Other than the nuisance, no biggie, damage-wise.

Worst case: fouled plug, oil puked out through breathers.

Consider: Better over-fill than under-fill.

Same thing happened to me after I bought my 2000 EX new last January. I wasn't sure if it was the dealer or Honda, but I suppose they probably ship new quads without oil or gas in them.

One other thing to check on new 400 EX's--that the dealers obviously don't bother doing--CHECK EVERY NUT AND BOLT. I lost several of each (vibrated loose) after the first few rides. Got replacements and locktited everythng.

When I bought my Rancher, I warmed it up then jumped on to go for my first ride. Everything was fine until I hit third gear, and hot oil came flying out all over my leg. The dealer had put oil in it but had not replaced the filler cap!!

I was having trouble checking the oil on my Rubicon after the first ride (22 mi). I decided to drain some oil until I found a mark and it ended up being 1 full quart overfull. This seems to be happening quite often so CHECK THAT OIL!
