Hi all

I have an '85 4trax that I borrowed from a friend, and I'm having a problem with it. I have a constant stream of fuel venting from the vent line hooked up to the bottom carb when the ATV is running. What would cause this?

It was running basically ok...I was riding in top gear when it all of a sudden died, and that is when the fuel started venting. The fuel pump was making a noticeable wizzing noise when I tried to restart it. It took awhile, but I finally got it started again, it was running ok and not venting fuel. I got it back to the truck, and took the intake tube off to get a closer look. The piston in the center of the carb was in the down position, and didnt move when running. Lots of fuel was running out of the hole in the throttle body to the left of the piston when trying to start it. It was hard to start and fuel was now constantly streaming out of the vent line. What are the most likely causes and where do I need to start troubleshooting this?

Most likely the floats are sticking and/or the float valve is not sealing properly. Sometimes tapping on the float bowl will jostle the floats enough to get them working. Removing the bowl and cleaning up the floats and the pin they move on may fix it. They may also just need an adjustment, although I think this is less likely. Float valves wear out over time. The rubber cone that forms the seal when the floats are up break down over time. If this is your issue just replace that part.
