There are many components of the ES system. Some of them are more prone to fail than others. I did some research on it a while back when I was working on my uncles 450 ES. The shift angle sensor is one of the items that get replaced a lot. You can test the shift angle sensor with an ohm meter and check to make sure it is good. Check all your electrical connections as well, but first and foremost, check ALL your fuses. There are some in the fuse box under the seat, but then there are also two 30 amp fuses under a clear cover behind the fuse box. One of those was blown on my uncles which caused it not to shift.
In the 2nd post on this page there is a downloadable service manual that shows you how to test and troubleshoot many components of the ES system.

I don,t know why but on my 2001 450 Foreman the E.S would act up once in a while and not work.
I would pull off the seat and pull out the fuses and reinstall them and everthing worked once again.
