Default 2006 Honda Rancher Automatic Shift Problems

I have a question about a 2006 Honda Rancher 4x4. The ATV has both Automatic and ES capability. The ATV performs fine in the ESP mode, but in Automatic mode it revs the engine but does not move along. If you let off the throttle and then puch the throttle again the bike will move along just fine. It just acts up when you try to start out a slow pace. It does not matter if you are going uphill, down hill, or on level ground.

We have checked the battery connections and the oil. The bike has about 600 miles on it and we have had it since it was new. We have also checked for error codes and none are retieved. Does anyone have any suggestions?

Yes, when it is having a problem it does seem like it is starting in high gear. I had the bike out again tonight and based on some other things that I have read I was trying a few things. If I run the bike up to about 20 mph and then slowly bring it back down the transmission acts fine. But if I run the bike up to about 20 and abruptly brake and stop the bike, then it acts up again. To correct the problem, I can then run the bike back up to 20 or so and slow down gradually and the bike performs correctly until I stop it quickly again. To me it acts like if it does not have time to shift down, then it gets confused what gear it is in and tries to start out again in a high gear. When it starts out in a high gear, I can also shift to nuetral cut the bike off and then start it up again and it acts fine. Little bit too much information, huh? I have a service manual, but I don't quite know where to start. I appreciate any help you can give me.

We have seen a fair number of posts on problems with this model. Perhaps there is some universal problem with it that can be discerned from all this. Honda discontinued it after only a couple years of production....perhaps for some good reason???

A search might help, but not sure what search terms to use? Even you didn't know how to properly identify your model....but I would start by searching "Rancher 400AT" for starters.

I would first initialize the ECM as discribed on page 24-9 to 24-11 ... Honda had an updated ECM for the 2004 model but the ECM wasn't the main problem , the problem was the centrifugal clutch ..
