Is std 30wt ok for air filter?

I use a K & N most of the time but in heavy dust riding, I will switch to a foam filter. What do you use to clean it (gasoline?) and what oil should i use? Years ago, I just used straight 30wt automotive oil for $1/quart vs. the expensive foam filter oil for $7.

I use foam all the time. I have a Uni on my 400EX. Most people and myself wash it with like dish detergent. Also use a foam filter oil I use Bel-Ray. It is extremely sticky and catches most of the particles. Also, I almost forgot there are also foam filter cleaners in spray form and they work extremely well.

If you are cheap, you can use regular motor oil. But the oil will settle to the bottom of the filter and leave the top with a very light coating of oil and the excess will settle at the bottom of you air box. I myself use only the pour on filter oilover the spray. You must squize the oil into all of the places on the filter, if not the dust will go though the foam at that location and ruin your engine.

Call me extravagant, but I think this is a bad place to save a couple of bucks. Shelling out a little extra now for a premium filter, specialty oil, and cleaner is alot less expensive than having your top end rebuilt. As the old commercial said "you can pay now, or you can pay later".
