Default Chain Adjustment on 1986 Honda Fourtrax 125

I got my son this four wheeler recently, no problems except the chain is way too tight. I attempted to adjust this myself by loosening the four bolts on the rear axle, and trying to adjust it by turning the adjuster nut but had no luck. Also tried rotating the tires either direction as I had read somewhere, but I just couldn't get any change at all in the chain regardless of how I adjusted it. I'm fairly mechanically inclined, so hoping to fix this myself since it seems minor. I just adjusted the chain on my Polaris and it worked great, but guessing I must be doing something wrong here. Any assistance would be appreciated.

You maybe doing everything right..Someone may have put an shorter chain on atv....I guess I would look to see adjusting slots in frame have got any space left in it to adjust forward any more. also may want to count the links in chain an see if shorter links then oem links. Can get correct link required on line to see ok.IMO if you loosened the four bolt enuff an turning the adjusters then that's all that required to adjust chain So dont over think things.like I said may have an shorter chain. Also may want to check axle bearings..The person may have shorten chain because bearings are worn an chain kept coming off..Good luck..
