Hey, I was ridin today and i heard this ticking in my 400ex. I tried to figure out what this was from and it would only make this loud ticking noise at about 1/4 throttle. I checked my plastic and i first thought that it was my chain but it would do it in nuetral. My dad seems to think that it is from the transmission. The quad isnt smokin and it has good oil. Please help!

my 220 does that, it's usually the valves. Take a screw driver and put it up to various parts of the engine, and listen through the screw driver to see where the sound is coming from. If it's at the top of the head, then it's the valves. Most likely, if it's running fine, it's nothing to worry about.

No dude if your vlaves have been clicking for a while then no wonder your bayou is blowing blue smoke.
Alright the noise is more than likely the valves. They prolly need adjusted. Or the cam chain which could need adjusting too or you are running to low octane and the piston is pinging. Since its at a low throttle position its probably because you bought some cheap gas/ or water with the gas.

i agree, since you said that there is enough oil in it, then it more or less rules out the valves, unless they are majorly out of tune, then it just wouldn't run good any time. it's probably cheap gas, you need to run 92 or 93 octane gas, just the preimum stuff from your local pump, i'm sure that will cure your problem. Just my .o2 cents

I rode w/ woods400ex today and i used the same gas out of the same can. My quad ran fine.It could possibly be the valves tho.
