Evidently all a buddy of mine needs is a bone stock (with paddles) 400EX to regularly beat raptors in relatively short (about 300') drag races on the sand. Yes the raptors have paddles too. Don't get me wrong, he has been beaten by raptors but he definately wins more than he loses. I have also see other people on 400EXs, stock and slightly modified, both beat and get beaten by raptors drag racing on the sand.

You all are giving the Raptor WAY more credit than what's due.

400EX - approx 27hp at approx 375 lbs

Raptor - approx 36hp at approx 400+ lbs (esp wet)

Now, that said....

I have about $800 in my engine. If you think it won't run with or outrun a stock Raptor, you're seriously kidding yourself. It doesn't take much to get the 400EX into the upper 30's in HP, and that alone will cause your 400 to be able to smoke a Raptor in a drag race.

My mods are as follows

39mm FCR carb -- Paid $400 (carb & cable)
87mm JE 10.8:1 piston -- $130
XR400 cam -- $110
Various head porting & machine work -- $100
Modified stock silencer -- $free
"ported" headpipe -- $included in the machine work
Modified airbox -- $free - maybe $5 for a spare lid
Gaskets -- $25
Correct throttle adjustment -- $free - seriously, this is a big problem on stock 400EX's

Now... If you're wanting even more power, especially top for the occasional drag race, spend about $50 more and get the GT Thunder cam... I run the XR for better low end for the woods racing I do. But if this were just a fun playrider I'd have the more agressive cam in it.

For a little more money you can sleeve and go with the 440 setup.

If you don't mind running race gas, you can bump up the compression even more & as long as you don't go too wild, the piston won't even cost any more.

All of this can be done and still maintain stock reliability. That was my objective - good fuel economy, good power, good reliability, at a good price. I got it all.

If you are smart about your mods, you can do a lot with a little.... It's all about choosing mods that compliment each other, and not getting too wild on any one aspect -- For instance going too wild on the cam will cause you to have to spend a whole lot on valvetrain, which is likely to only yeild meager performance per dollar spent.

WHat i was trying to think of why not try tofind alow displacement car engine with a turbo and have some custom make a manifold and you mite have to do some big mods to make it work i dont know but if you were able to get it to work you would have a pretty quick machine dont change the piston either.all the stress with the turbo so you need low compression.....

just an idea...

or you can look at the guy give him the finger and jump out im front of him and roost his *** but im guessing were all good people...(((yeah right))))

Finally a man that makes sense !!!

I own a 400EX, my best friend owns a Raptor. Stock for stock, in a straight DRAG race,(on a dirt road)the Raptor does NOT have that big of an advantage over the EX. On loose terrain the Raptor hooks up much better and has a larger lead.
Now lets talk about trails....a 400EX will out-perform a Raptor 8 days a week, remember this is stock for stock!!!!! A Raptor is to narrow to keep up with a more stable EX on winding trails. Now hit a staight-away and ride a little nuts, and you'll catch the EX. We are both here right now, the Raptor owner and the EX owner and there is NO arguement here. Just remember how you want to beat a Raptor; In a drag race? In the woods?
Or on a MX track, cuz you'll want different mods for all !!!!!!! Don't get mad Raptor fans, it's a awesome new bike with lot's of un-tapped power, but STOCK FOR STOCK we speak the truth.
