300ex basket case, is this worth it?

Hey guys. I have an opportunity to buy a 300ex and wanted some opinions from people who are more familiar with these quads.
The 300ex is overall good to very goodish condition, everything is there except the engine is out in a box and mostly disassembled. All of the major engine components are there and look good. The original problem turned out to NOT be engine related, the owner just got himself in deep.
I'm comfortable with getting the motor back together and ordering the missing bits. I've built motors before, I just need a manual.
Price is 450. Would you jump on it? Thanks!

I might if I had an extra 450 laying around and the time to futz with it. In my area, you can get a pretty nice one for under 2k, so if it needs much more than another 500 that would weigh into it.

Around here, you can buy a 300ex in good running condition for around $1000. It might be worth it if you don't have to buy many more parts. Could fix it up and sell it and make a few hundred probably. $450 sounds like too much for me for a machine with the engine in pieces. $300 tops is all they should expect. I assume the owner doesn't have the money to pay someone to fix it so that's why they're selling it like that. You're doing them a favor offering them anything the way I look at it. I'd throw an offer of $250 at them.

The 400 tends to be a lot more quad, but the 300 is good for trail riding, especially if you don't ride at warp speed all the time.

The ride area (literally) 5 minutes from my house is mostly sand and I'm 200 lbs, so I'm leaning toward a 400 unless a 300 falls in my lap. Plus the 300ex's cost pretty much the same as the 400's here, maybe 200 dollars difference.
The feedback is much appreciated, guys!

I'll 2nd buying the 400ex, noticeable difference in power. I'd rather spend a little more for something in running condition than hope I got a good deal on a basketcase. You think it only needs this and this and then you end up spending more money buying other stuff you didn't even know it needed at the time. If the engine is junk, there's a pretty good chance the clutch and rear end aren't in top notch condition either.
