This is strange... I currently own 3 snowmobiles and a Polaris Xplorer 400, and I've NEVER heard of this happening, and I've run the tank dry many a time (especially in the 4-wheeler, because there's no gas gauge...). Is it a problem that existed only in older 2-strokes?

You said it stays running when you hit the engine stop button. How is this possible with no spark?

Fuel begins igniting on it's own (detonation). It's the same theory a diesel engine operates under, except with a gasoline engine, it's destructive.

As have I.... My 250R has only done it once out of the many times I have run it dry. Not sure of the exact circumstances that cause it.

I've seen it on Banshee's, 250R's, even a tricked out Sea-doo HX Jet ski, and probably a bunch of stuff thru the years that I've forgotten.

Usually the engine isn't really developing much power when it's doing this, so it's pretty easy to kill with the clutch - it's still pretty scary though when it happens.
