what would keep me from shifting in to 1st n or r will up shift 2 3 4 5 and down 4 3 2 but not 1 n r any advice is welcome

 

The usual Honda selection problems tend to occur in all gears, so it seems like you may have a bent selector fork. However, it is worth removing the clutch cover and checking the levers, star wheel and pawl for breaks, tightness, and cracks. If they are all OK, it is engine out, and split the cases to check the shift drum, selector forks and gears.
