The electronics are pretty weird on the FA and won't let you shift above 3rd if the bike isn't going fast enough, even in ES, and will shift back down to suit engine speed. So were you trying the bike in ES on the move? If so it looks like the computer isn't getting the signal from the speed sender on the engine, could be a broken unit or wire, would have thought it would fault code though.

Like I wrote above, seems like the computer is thinking you are stopped or going slow, so won't change up in auto and won't let you change above 3rd in ES. I was working on a 420 FA yesterday, and noticed another speed sensor on the front diff, so could be either one not sending the message to the ECU.
Yes, I would have expected a fault code, I work on 420FAs very rarely so don't know how to fetch codes up on the display. You may find something if you Google it, but it may be best to take the bike to the Honda dealer.
