Honda rancher 350 LOCKED UP
#1
I have a 2000 350 rancher that my daughter was riding and it suddenly locked up pulled into garage and noticed that it was low on oil i filled it up about 3/4 of a qt low i put oil down the cylinder and did get it to break loose but was very stiff never started it but then siezed up again just pulling it over. It apears it hold 2 qts of oil would it have siezed running down less then a qt.

Yes. The number of 350s I have rebuilt due to owners letting them get low on oil must be about 40 by now. Because they only hold 2 litres and air cooled engines all use oil, they soon run out. Check the oil level when you fill up with fuel. Piston will have seized and scored the bore, little end may also have seized, and the seized pin can be a right pain to remove. You don't need to take the engine out unless the piston has broken up and shed bits into the bottom end and gearbox.

Thank you for the advice i have since replaced piston and cylinder had to tear lower case apart due to piston breaking pin was frozen in rod but was able to get it out. I know run good oil in it change it often and check it every time we ride. Fan is also coming on as it should if riding at a slow pace for extended time oil temo light does work but has never come on.

Glad you got it working. One point I forgot to mention about 350s, this applies to other Hondas too, the oil seal round the gearchange shaft has a habit of working out and leaking a small amount of oil. Due to the 2 litre capacity of 350s, it is surprising how soon that small leak empties the sump. ES emergency shifter shafts are as prone to this as foot gearchanges.

If it has come out, and weeping from outside, shove back in and put just enough washers between pedal and seal, so seal can't work it's way out again. If seal is weeping from middle, then fit a new seal. On ES models a washer and hose clip on shaft will stop the seal from working out.
