Honda ATC 200S Project

Hey i got a honda atc 200s. I redid the top end 2 year ago and all the timing and its was running well. I have not touched it since winter and its does not want to start, i cleaned the carb and its has spark. I dont think the timing would have changed just by sitting there? Thanks for the help

Remove the plug, put a couple of squirts of engine oil, from an oil can, down the plug hole. Fit a clean dry plug and try to start the engine. After a lay up, piston rings get sticky and compression may drop. A film of oil round the piston seals it and ups compression. A clean dry plug ensures the best spark possible. Another possibility is a sticky valve, if clearance has suddenly increased, a valve may be stuck slightly open.

Water getting in through the plug hole is fairly bad for the engine. Do a compression test. Much below 90psi and engines get bad to start. Clean the trigger coil in the case on the end of the camshaft, that engine is prone to poor sparks due to rust in there. As it has stood outside, check for water in the carb.

When you take the cylinder off you need to check everything, bore for wear, and hone it if it is OK, valves for pitted seats, and grind them in anyway. Cylinder head and cylinder faces for signs of a blown gasket. Cam for wear on the lobes. Did you check the top ring end gap before fitting it to the new piston? After the rebuild, double check valve timing and clearances.
