Default Engine serial number

Can anyone tell me where I can find the engine serial number on the engine in the pics? Frame sticker says it's a TRX500FM6 but I don't think that's correct. Parts diagrams don't match up for that model. Belongs to a friend of mine I'm trying to help out with parts.

Looks like a 500 manual to me, only other Honda engine that looks anything like that is the 450, and those are 500 plastics. Many of the castings are embossed with a code, can't quite remember but something like HPO for a 500 and HNO for the 450. Cylinder and head were different, so find those casting numbers and you know which it is. Sure you were not looking at a 500FA parts list, same frame and plastics but water cooled Hondamatic engine.

Forget the 6, look up 500FM and you should get the right model, year is important, but Honda hardly changed the 500FM from introduction to the end, except gearbox and they always supply the later gears (which will fit) as early ones were crap.

Thanks for all the answers from everyone. Looks like it's a 2005 model.

Hard luck, you have got the crap gearbox, unless the faulty gears have already been changed. They usually didn't last the guarantee out, so they probably have.
