I have a 1985 ATC110 that has had some transmission issues. I had replaced the drum stopper (gearshift) arm after discovering it was allowing the transmission to skip gears. After that it ran fine until last fall when it stopped engaging into gear at all. I can shift it to 1st and 2nd then it won’t shift any further and it does not engage either gear.
I have removed the right side cover, clutch pack, and drive gear (not sure what this is called) behind and to the left of the clutch pack. They all look good. However, I am not sure if the shift drum roller plate is in the correct position. Can anyone confirm what the orientation should be?
also, does anyone have a service manual for this vehicle they can share?
The shift drum star wheel goes round as you change gear. there should be a sprung lever with a roller on the end that lifts in and out of the star as it goes round. The bit of star shown at the bottom in your pic, stops the drum moving further than bottom gear one way and top gear the other.
The lever with roller on the end fits into the case you can see in the pic on most Hondas. If it fits into the other case half on your machine, things are more difficult to work out, but the selector forks that the shift drum moves, would stop the drum from going much further than that lump on the star wheel allows. True you could bend the forks if the drum could go too far, but that would mean a complete strip anyway, to get at them. Lift rear wheels off the ground. while turning them slowly, turn star wheel round, star wheel should go through each gear in turn, one way, then stop turning, then you should be able to go back through the gears, turning the star wheel the other way while moving rear wheels round. If you can't, there is something seriously wrong with shift drum or selector forks. Is the star wheel tight on the drum, because a loose star wheel is often the cause of shifting problems?
