This was going to be my 2nd oil change, my first oil change I waited to do until I got a torque wrench ($80.00)so everthing was to Honda spec. Well this weekend I pull it out, warm it up & go to loosen the oil tank drain and SNAP 2 1/2 QT'S of GN4 are on the ground in 2 seconds. The hole thing broke there is a hole the size of a quarter in the botton of the tank!!!! Before it was done draining I was on the phone with the dealer telling them the story before I could finish they told me I did it and there was nothing they could do. I will be calling Honda today to bitch. Oh yea the price of a new one $168.00 I feel like I'm being Fuc#@d!!

I did the exact same thing. The good news is it's easy to replace.

wow thats sucks. Maybe look into getting one of the aftermarket larger capacity units since you have to buy a new one. I forget the company that makes them though.

Take the tank to someone who knows how to tig weld. For $20 - $30 thry can fix it better than new. Clean it up good (don't use gasoline!) and it will probably be cheaper.

I am very happy to tell you all that I
talked to Honda today about my oil tank and they are going to take care of everthing!!
Honda seemed a little pissed that the dealer just gave me the main Honda phone # and said it's not covered.I asked if I should call the dealer to make a appointment and they said no that they would call the dealer for me just to take the quad to them.

Soon to be fixed 01 400EX

Did they say that this was a common problem? I like to change my own oil and you have me a little worried about it breaking. Can you tell what caused it, ie overtighting the bolt, bad spot in the tank, etc. Any information on this would be helpful.

I did the exact same thing on my '99. The dealership did the first change. When I did the second change it broke. Think it was around 180 for replacment and labor. So far it is the only major problem I have had.

MagnumMudMan....it's not a common problem. Just make sure and use the washer in between the bolt and the oil reservoir and don't overtighten the bolt.

Well, when I was told that it was not covered I asked to talk to parts to see how much more I was going to be indept and he said that he has heard of 3 other cases in the area. As far as why it happened I dont know I used a torque wrench on the last oil change. When I talked to Honda they had no problem takeing care of it so Im sure it's happening all over the country. I'm just glad Honda stepped up to the plate and helped me out.

Do what I do, when ever I use a torque wrench on anything I just dab A LITTLE bit of oil on the threads so you get the most accurate reading as possible. Try it, I've had readings be one thing dry but then when I used a little oil I got a different one. So far I've had no problems.
