I have a 14 tooth onmine and I love it! when exactly do you go 70 ona trail? um......prolly never. and I guarantee that you did lose a little bottom end, its purely physics. If you are a road rider only then by all means I am sure it would be great. 14 is right for me most of the time. I ride a lot of trails, some large sand hills, and quite a bit of road too. but unless I am riding with my friends 400 sport I don't need to worry about goin back to a 15. I will be faster on top end with the rest of the people I ride with. and that is ok.

I just posted a topic on this. Yes there is such thing as a 35 rear. Nacs sells them. But instead of running 16/38. Run 16/36. You will not regret it. It runs alot faster. And will still yank up a wheelie with ease in the first 3 gears. Once to 5th the ex just plain out flies.

The case saver took me probably 3 and half minutes to grind down. I did not have to add any linkes to my chain either.

Any other questions please let me know. But give this mod a try. Run 16/36.

MAG 500 YOU ARE A IDIOT. 1ST GEAR IS ALMOST USELESS ON A 400EX FOR TAKE OFF IN ANY KIND OF RACING. I FLAT TRACKED AND STARTED IN 2ND GEAR EVRY TIME. NOW I CAN LEAVE IN 1ST AND PULL AWAY THROUGHOUT WHOLE RUN. THE 400EX IS A TORQUE MOTOR,YOU DONT HAVE TO TURN THE CRAP OUT OF IT. YOU CAN SHORT SHIFT AND LET IT GRUNT,THATS WHAT A 400EX WILL DO! I ALREADY TOLD YOU IVE TRIED IT AGAINST A STOCK ONE AND MODIFIED AND THERE IS NO BOTTOM END LOSS WORTH MENTIONING. IF YOU ARE ONLY RIDING TRAILS WITH A 400EX MAYBE YOU SHOULD TRADE IT IN FOR A 250EX OR TRAILBLAZER. THIS SPROCKET IS FOR PEOPLE WHO WANT TO GO FAST. ID SAY WITH NO REVERSE TRAIL RIDING ISNT QUITE WHAT HONDA HAD IN MIND WHEN THEY CAME OUT WITH THE 400EX WOULD YOU?
AND NO MATTER WHERE YOU TRAIL RIDE, THERE WILL ALWAYS BE A PLACE TO STRETCH IT OUT AND RUN YOUR BUDDIES. LET ME KNOW HOW IT GOES WHEN YOU PULL UP BESIDE ONE WITH A 16 ON THE FRONT. THE 400EX WAS FOR RACING,DRAG,FLAT,MX,WHATEVER NOT A TRAIL ONLY BIKE. GET YOU A TIMBERWOLF OR SOMETHING.

I know this was a really old post, but WAIT A MINUTE! I run a 14 tooth front sprocket, too, and so do many people I race MX with. To each his own - no one is stupid if they are setting their bike up the way they want to - everyone has their own riding style and their own unique adjustments. I also have a 400EX. I take offense! (even if it's 3 month old offense!)

I run a 14T as well - mainly because of my 22" rear tires. If I just wanted to drag race I would have gotten a 250R.

stock they come with a 15 AND A 38 S0 THAT IS A 0.39473 RATIO
A 16 AND 38 IS 0.42105
A 15 AND 42 IS .35714
A 15 AND 34 IS .44116
A 15 AND 35 IS .4287
A 16 AND 39 IS .39020

SO 1 FRONT TOOTH IS EQUAL TO < 3> REAR TEETH!

Hey shockwave , 1 tooth in front is NOT equivilent to 2 in the rear , it is in between 2 and 3 NOT just 2.
