I have had lots of squeeks on my 400ex all over and there was nothing that WD-40 didn't take care of. But i never had noise coming from the area you describe.

It wouldnt hurt to take the axle off and grease the bearings, i bought a bearing carrier that had a grease zerk on the outside and i grease it every time i wash my quad. Works like a charm.

I bought the RAD dual row bearing carrier. I saw their add in Dirtwheels and bought it from them. It ran around $180, I think, but that was for my 250X. Their #is 877-277-1112

The locking nuts are a pain in the a$$ if you ask me. The nut is left hand thread and getting it off might give you hours of cursing, screaming, hair pulling, and fustration. Mine when I took it off was froze up so I had to heat it up to get it off. My advice to you is once you get it off do yourself a favor and thorw it in the trash can. I bought a durablue axle locknut. For $50.00 it was by far one of the best things I ever did to my quad.

does the 400ex have a master-link? that sounds really dumb, but i looked for about 30 minutes and could not find it. i also had my dad look too and he couldnt find it, and yes i do know what a master link looks like. its just not there we looked on both sides the chain and no luck. i have been riding it too for the past 3 weeks and the chain has not came off so i dont know how its on there. any help?
Thanks,
Chris

My 400EX has always had the same intermittant "squeaky" axle since I bought it...

The guys I had look at it said it is the seals rubbing the axle...not the bearings themselves. Therefore there should be no problems, however, if its squeaking, its heating up, and therefore the seals MAY wear faster. Just keep an eye on it, and if you do a lot of riding thru water, loosen the 4 axle bolts (like you are adjusting the chain) from time to time....I have noticed that the axle housing WILL hold a small amount of water, and loosening the bolts will let it out.

I don't think the 400EX has a master link. You just need to slack up the chain adjuster, and pop off the chain...
