A backfiring Honda is perfectly normal, just wear ear plugs and you will be fine.

I think your a little rich. Turn the air/fuel mixture screw on the carb counter clockwise 1 turn at a time until it quits backfiring and the plug is brown colored.

The four hundreds did this because of exhaust leak, nothing to worry about and nothing you can do about it,the 1995 and some 1996 were doing this, what year is yours.Tim1,not all honda's back fire!

Too rich or too lean, cannot remember which. Know I have read Greg Hall's answer to this problem on Tech Connection. Might try searching for it.

Good luck.

If its backfiring when you let off its definetly rich. If its sputtering and cutting out getting up to speed its lean. If the plug is white its lean, black its rich, brown its good.

My Foreman has always done that and I even played with the jetting all over the place and it didn't help. Glad to know it wasn't something that I did.

I know this is an old post but I just going through the foremans 400 posts. I got a 00 and it only slightly does that when your reved up in 5 gear and let it off. It doesn't do it in any other gear or when going to a steep in in 2 or third. When it does start to back fire when your going down hills and stuff it is time to adjust the valves.
