Honda 400EX Larger Oil Cooler
#1
Hello,
I am contemplating manufacturing a larger oil cooler for the Honda 400EX. out here in California mine can get pretty warm and i think a larger cooler would be very beneficial. I have seen kits for the 300EX but none for the 400EX. If i were to manufacture a high quality bolt-on replacement would anyone out there be interested in it? I appreciate any comments/suggestions you may have. Thank you!

I didn't think Pingry made an aftermarket oil cooler for the 400EX, just a larger "oil tank". Still, I would like to replace the cast aluminum POS stock tank with a Pingry unit, but would also be interested in a larger oil cooler--I know how hot it can be here in CA. I would be interested though if (1) it was a clean easy to bolt-on mod, and (2) wasn't too expensive. What are your thoughts on the cost?

I Live in Sacramento. These oil coolers would be manufactured by a leading radiator manufacturer of custom oil coolers/radiators. i have seen the replacement oil tanks, but no replacement oil coolers. i haven't figured out the price yet. to be honest the engineers are friends of mine and they are going to design/manufacture one or two for me, and i was curious if anyone else had any interest in it. we are thinking of making it out of aluminum. if anyone would like to discuss it further, please feel free to give me a call. my experience with oil coolers is from VW engines in 914's. we used to add additional oil coolers when we raced. fortunately the 400 seems to have plenty of room for a larger one..

Well, like I said, I'd be interested if the installation was clean and it wasn't outrageously expensive. No zip tie mounting either! *L* Actually, it would be trick to use the top two mount points that the stock cooler uses, as well as a lower bracket that could share the mount where the lower bar for the front plastic mounts to the frame. What about different lines to connect the cooler to the tank? Do you think new ones will be necessary? Anyway, once you and your engineering friends come up with a design and cost, let me know--email me direct at "jswanson@bigfoot.com". I definitely need to come up with something soon for better cooling though...my recent 416cc upgrade has made my engine run even hotter.

Nick,
I sure am excited to hear that someone is considering doing this. I made a post regarding a bigger oil cooler several weeks ago, and, as I suppose you've seen, there doesn't appear to be a solution out there right now. I have to think that with all of the modded and raced 400's out there, there has to be a market for the things. God knows I want one! Something else that I've seen that you might want to consider for your cooler would be a set of air dams (like on the 250r) to direct more air over the cooler.
Anyway, let me know if you get things going - hinesdm@hotmail.com.
Regards,
Dennis
