400EX modifications to keep up with a 250
#1
What kind of modifications and how much money do you need to dump into a 400EX, to make it keep up with a 250R or LT250R. Do you have to rebuild the whole top end, big piston and sleeve, cam, pipe, jets, airbox mods? Would it more sense to just by a 2 stroke and just put a pipe one it? Should someone drop $800 - $1000 into a $5,400 quad to make it keep up with a used $2000 - $3000 quad?

Depends of the 250...if it's tricked out, you will hardly ever keep up. If it's bone stock, you might be closer...the advantage of the 400EX is that it doesn't waste power with spinning...it's got grippy tires, smooth powerband, and no power()...can hardly spin, when a 2 stroke (even the "torquier" 250 singles) has a hard hitting powerband that just breaks the back end loose. More fun, but not faster for sure...
Depends also where you want to keep up...drag? MX? trails? I can surely enough say that if you're racing MX, your machine has minor effect on your performance (at first...when you become pro, you'll need the best...). The only place where rider makes a little difference is in drag races...but you're nt buying a 400EX for drag racing, aren't you?
