400EX or 500 Scrambler
#11
Josh-
I'm just playing with you- so don't take it too personal-
But to answer your questions...
A 440ex is untouchable- It will smoke a piped raptor as well as a banshee. The compression you get out of a 440ex is unbelieveable- it makes the bike king of the hill.
Of course you can always drop a high compression piston in a raptor and then you got the ultimate machine-... but nobody is looking for that much power.
...now- when you put a 400ex up against the raptor and banshee... the 400ex runs the fastest lap times on trail and mx racing.- why? because it's the best handling bike. - however on a strait line- the raptor is the fastest.
I agree with you- the scrambler is better when in a situation where a clutch has to be ridden'. Rocks, stumps etc... but if that's all you are riding ... I would consider a 4x4 and again NOT a Scrambler.
I honestly feel the Scrambler is an inferior machine. Polaris makes great 4x4's and Great snowmobils- but when it comes to sport machines- they just don't cut it.

Nah, I never take anything I see/read on here personally. You believe that the Polaris Scrambler in an inferior Machine, and I believe that it is good (not perfect) all around quad. Some people are going to agree with you, and some with me (probably not on the Honda forum) and that is just the way it is. I know what I've got, and for the most cases I'd rather have it than the 400ex. I would like 400ex style handling when jumping and stuff like that, but that is about it. Maybe if I would have bought a 400ex instead i would be singing a different tune, but I don't know.
I still find it hard to believe that a 440ex would keep up with at 75hp Scrambler, but I have never seen them race. Where did you see them?
I saw a stock 400ex go against my friends Banshee and I really wasn't impressed. I suppose that it must be the rider since my friend on the Shee said he has a harder time keeping up with me.
Oh well, you like what you got, I like what I've got and as long as that is the case then it is the way it should be. We can't argue over which quad is better, because we just proved that each individual rider has to make that decision for themselves.
Take care,
-Josh

And can it be installed for $1500? According to RotGutBottom the 440ex kit is around $1500 (does that include pipes and stuff too?) so I'd imagine the 505 kit is a little bit more pricey and I still haven't seen proof as to whether it can or can't beat a Race Mod Scrambler (remember, we were talking about spending $1500 bucks on both quads).
I was checking out that site that has all the Dyno test on it and the 440ex with other mods Dynoed at like 40hp. Now all I hear about is this power to weight ratio talk and by my calculations the Scrambler would have a better HP to weight ratio. Either way I noticed a lot of questions like "Would a 440ex beat a Banshee" or "Would a 440ex beat a Raptor", and I hear people say yes and no. So obviously it's a close race. A trail mod Scrambler can beat a Banshee with Pipes and high performance carbs, so it's obvious that the 75hp race mod Scram would beat it by even more.
However, Like I said, I have never seen the two quads race and I'm guessing that you guys haven't either have you?
Either way it doesn't solve anything.

The 400EX is useless for drag racing, I have NEVER been beaten by an EX in a drag race, and my 400 is just a 65hp trail mod, I ride my buddys 400ex sometimes and it is really fun to jump, but it is an absolute slug. My 500X will even beat a 400ex in a drag, stock vs. stock. The fact of the matter is the 400EX is a great handling/jumping quad, but it has NO power!

I have owned both a 400 EX and a Scrambler 500. I now own two (2) Bombardier DS650's. It has the best ride and is quicker that both of them. You will be hard pressed to buy a 400ex or Scrambler 500 after you test ride a Bombardier DS650. Just the facts!

You guys kill me. Someone brings up Scrambler 500 and you want to start talking about racing and handling. Its a 550lb. 4x4, it was never made to do either. The 2x4 is just a 4x4 without the extra front-end weight, it was never meant for speed or handling either.
What a 4x4 Scrambler will do is go through mud no sport bike will make it through. It'll climb hills no 2WD will ever get up and it'll go over obstacles such as trees and rocks no low-clearance sport-bike will make it over. Throw in the fact that its liquid-cooled, has reverse and its dam* fast as 4x4's go.

Hello
got a question about the 400ex and white brothers e-series muffler?
My boy does harescrambles and just installed a white brothers, you talked about rejetting the carb. the information booklet that came with the muffler, says that NO rejetting is required... We ran the quad with a number 9 plug (cooler) and had problems starting, but we switched to a number 8 (hotter) plug and it started to run fine... do you think it still needed rejetted and why..
thanks again
