250t dead
#1
I recently bought a 83atc 250r which had to be leaned out to rev up. I took it to a dealer which said it was the cdi. The cdi quit and i got a new one from a wrecker. Now it will not fire at all. The carb is fine. The reeds are fine. Compresion is 125 PSI. Timing is about 5 Degrees before TDC. There is fuel getting to plug as i can wet it out if i try. Tried pull starting. It will not fire at all. Please help as i do not want to take it bake to shop.

The timing was done with an auto timing light. There is a good spark. The coil was exchanged with a known good one. Also tried a couple of new spark plugs. The compresion might be a little low but it is an air cooled engine and this should make it not fire???

Motor Basic 101: You need 3 things to make a motor run. Fuel, Spark and compression. If you have good Spark and I am assuming that you have fuel in the tank, then it is compression. 125 lbs is awful low. I would check into that more.

I've always heard an engine won't start with the kickstart at 125 or lower. It should be at 190 probably.

The problem is most likely electrical.
Compression of 125 is low but it should start. I had a half melted piston in my R and was able to kick start it with my hand and it still ran (badly and no power but it got me back to camp). Compression of 190 is not necessary; 150 is fine.

I had an 83 R also. My actual timing was 90 degrees out because of a faulty coil. Contact a good bike shop about replacing your stator assembly, since Honda does not sell individual coils. The mechanical timing seemed on. Ricky Stator also has stator plates. I replaced mine and she screamed on the first kick!!!!!!
Could be similar problem with yours......bad pulsor coil.
Good luck
