Sticky Recon Shifter
#1
Howdy-
I have an reasonably unflogged (so I'm told)'99 Recon with an intermittent sticky upshift problem. It began about 6 mo ago and is getting progressively worse. Originally, the initial 1-2 upshift would be consistently notchy, needing a good footyank. All other upshifts were OK. After that initial cold 1-2 shift, all was well.
Now it's the same thing for the next 2 gears. A few times, I could only 1-2 shift by reaching down and yanking HARD. Usually it's not that bad, though. Sometimes it's perfectly fine. But when the beast surfaces, the effort is almost higher than the original 1-2 problem. Almost sure the oil isn't too old, but I have new Honda oil and filter anyway that is yet to be put in. Clutch adjustment problem or sticking in the gears?
Thanks,
taylord

UHHHH..........Your '99 RECON does NOT have an oil filter.
I would suggest an oil change and clutch adj., first. But the problem may be deeper than that. Sounds like there could be wear or breakage of something in the shift drum/fork area. Possibly, the pin or "finger" that follows a groove in the shift-drum is bent.

<< Yup, I was afraid of that. Well, if it has no filter, then I'll have to have a talk with the dealer as they sold me one. Thanks. >>
Don't worry.....a motorcycle shop just sold my buddy an oil filter for his 2001 Recon. Don't know what these people are thinking.
